The month of May was the busiest so far this year for the junior section of Selby Striders Athletic club, with 12 youngsters taking part in events from 10K road races, track and field meetings and fun runs. And in the process two new club records were set.
The oldest sections of the juniors is the under 20s, in this age group the youngsters can take part in senior road races, and this summer Stuart Fox as ran twice already, at Pocklington and Easingwold, and his times of 40 minutes 57 seconds and 41:37 respectively suggest that he will soon run under 40 minutes. Emma Kennedy is the oldest girl in the club, and she performed well in the West Yorkshire League meeting at Wakefield, where she threw the Discus 21.11 mts.
In the under 17s age group four members took part in the first York Summer League meeting on May 18th. Emily Bennison became the 3rd fastest girl on the clubs all-time list in the 800 mts with a time of 2 mins 56 secs, and Grace Priddy clocked 3:08 in the same race, following on her time of 12 mins 03 secs for the Beverley 2K Fun Run earlier in the month. Mike Nattriss clocked a new PB of 5 mins 10.9 secs in the 1500 mts and Courtney Chambers ran 6 mins 34 in the girls race.
In the under 15 age group there were some of the most impressive performances, including one of the new club records set in the month. That was achieved by Holly Lloyd at York in the Shot Put with a throw of 9.35 mts, she also threw a new PB of 19.50 mts in the discus. Her brother Tom was also in PB form on that day, with a discus throw of 21.63 mts. Earlier in the month, at Doncaster on May 12th he ran a new PB in the 100 mts with a time of 13.00 secs. But when it comes to sprinting this summer Tom’s clubmate Jack Bason is proving to be the one to watch. Jack set a new PB of 12.69 secs at Cleckheaton on May 22nd in the West Yorks League following his effort of 25.87 secs at Wakefield . Also in in this age group Rosie Hopwood made her debut for the club at York with a 2.92 mts Long Jump, followed by a time of 6 mins 38 secs in 1500mt.
Last, but certainly not least, we come to the youngest age group, the under 11s. Olivia Graddon ran 80 mts in 12.80 secs and Long Jumped 2.92 mts at Doncaster on May 12th, but it is James Thomson who takes the accolade of ‘top man’’ for the month following his tremendous effort of 9 mins 47 secs for 2.5 K at the Leeds Fun Run, and then setting the second of our club records with a time of 2 mins 14 secs for 600 mts at York.
