Our Vision

The Selby Striders Pacing Team is an exciting new venture where we give back to the running community by helping others achieve their personal bests.

We aim to build a trusted, professional pacing team across the region—with a long-term vision of pacing at iconic races such as the London Marathon and the Great North Run.

Becoming a Pacer

We are looking for committed Selby Striders who want to give back and support fellow runners.
• You tell us which pace(s) you’re interested in
• The admin team will allocate pacing roles
• Selection is based on ensuring you can comfortably and consistently deliver the pace

Verification Process:
• We will review your results on Power of 10
• You will be required to provide evidence via Strava (or similar)
• This ensures you are capable of pacing accurately and confidently

Our aim is to make pacing an enjoyable, controlled experience—not a race effort for you.

Key Pacing Rules

  1. Accuracy is Everything
    • You must aim to finish within ±20 seconds of your target time
    • Maintain even pacing throughout the race (no big surges or fades)
  2. Consistency & Experience
    • Pacing requires practice and control
    • You must be confident holding a steady pace over the full distance
  3. Start Position
    • Line up in the correct start pen/area for your pace
    • This ensures runners can find you easily from the beginning
  4. Warm-Up & Kit Check
    • Arrive early
    • Warm up with your pacing flag to ensure it is comfortable and secure
    • Make any adjustments before the race begins

Mindset of a Pacer

Pacing is not about your race.
• If you are chasing your own time → pacing is not for you
• If you are willing to sacrifice your race to help others succeed → you are ready

Your role is to:
• Encourage runners
• Maintain morale
• Deliver them to their goal time

Commitment Expectations
• We aim to fill pacing roles with Selby Striders wherever possible
• Reliability and consistency are key
• The more you volunteer and commit, the more opportunities you will receive

This is not for dipping in and out:
• We need runners dedicated to the long-term vision
• Especially as we aim to access high-demand races in the future

Race Entry

We will aim to secure free race entries for pacers in recognition of:
• Your time
• Your commitment
• Your role in supporting other runners

Kit Responsibility

Our pacing kit is professional and valuable.

Before the race:
• Arrive early
• Assemble and adjust your flag

After the race:
• Carefully dismantle equipment
• Store it properly, ready for the next event

Conduct & Representation

When pacing, you represent Selby Striders.
• Be professional at all times
• Be supportive, approachable, and positive
• Uphold the reputation of the club

Injury or Withdrawal
• If you become injured during the race, step aside safely
• We aim to have two pacers per time slot:
• One carrying the flag
• One wearing hi-vis

This ensures continuity for runners

Final Note

Look after the kit.
Support your runners.
Enjoy the experience.

And most importantly—help us build something special.

Together, we can take Selby Striders pacing from local races to the biggest stages.
