Running shoe recommendations from the Selby Striders
Article by Selby Strider Nick Winn
Shoes. A runner’s true weak point. We tell ourselves we don’t need any more. Just one pair. Well, ok, one for tempo runs and one for easy runs. Maybe a third for long runs as well. And a spare pair as well. Just in case. There was a discount on them. It makes sense. I’ll need them eventually.
However, it’s easy to get lost in the lingo. From working out if you want a shoe with heel, mid or fore foot strike to the right stack height to working out your pronation. There is a lot to stumble through and selecting the right running shoe can be a mix of personal preference and specific needs.
Luckily, our members on Facebook are a fountain of knowledge. We asked them about their favourite road running shoes. Here are some of their top brands.
Nike
Nike remains a popular choice among our club members, with different models serving distinct purposes. The Nike Pegasus was commended for its reliable performance, while the Nike Vaporfly and Nike Streakfly were specifically highlighted for racing and speedwork, respectively.
New Balance
A few members advocated for New Balance shoes, notably the New Balance 1080s. Praised for their great fit, drop and cushioning, they are also spacious enough to accommodate custom insoles. Additionally, the New Balance Fresh Foam has been recommended, especially for those seeking wide-fit options.
Under Armour and ASICS
Our speedsters swear by the Under Armour trainers with a carbon sole plate for flat races. For regular running, the ASICS Gel Exalt 5 and ASICS Nimbus series are go-to options for several Striders.
Saucony
For runners looking for lightness and comfort, the Saucony Triumph emerged as a preferred choice. These shoes are not only comfortable but come in eye-catching colours like mint green and orange.
Hoka
If you tend to run on your forefoot, several Striders recommended Hoka trainers, specifically the Arahi, Cliftons, Clifton Edge’s and Bondi’s. They’ve been a game-changer for those suffering foot discomfort on longer runs.
Brooks
The Brooks Adrenaline GTS is a preferred choice for many, especially for those who require wide fit versions to prevent blisters.
Altra
One of our runners also highly recommended the Altra Rivera 2 for those with wider feet. With its zero-drop platform and roomy toe box, it offers a perfect blend of comfort and balance.
Merrell
For a minimalistic running experience, the Vapor Glove 6 from Merrell has been recommended enthusiastically.
All runners are different, and there is no perfect shoe for everyone. The journey to finding the perfect pair can be quite an adventure. From fashion-conscious runners matching their shoes with their outfits to those who love the chase of finding the perfect pair, everyone has their unique shoe story.
What works for one runner may not work for another. Use these insights as a starting point, but don’t be afraid to explore and find what works best for you.
